The Boys of Summer

It appears that Dad passed on his love of sports on to his sons.

Jim, Tom, Don - around 1958
Dad has the boys identified, but didn't date this picture.

Tom - back row, left -- Don - front row, far right

In the 1959 picture, Don is the first right in the front row. He is wearing sunglasses. Jim looks smaller than the other boys on his team, but he was the catcher on the championship team. Lou and I watched a lot of ball games when our boys were young. Oft times, there were three teams, and we had to each go to a separate game. This was especially true in little league football. Lou Jr was playing as a freshman on the high school team, and Jim and the twins were on separate teams in little league. All of the games were played on Saturday morning. That really kept us moving. Tom and Don wore uniforms with white pants. I can still remember scrubbing those pants each week to get the grass stains out. That was before the days of all the wonderful stain removers. I can also remember leaving my school early, so I could get up to the Jr High and watch Don's wrestling match. He wrestled at 85 pounds, and that match was always first. A few years later, I was rushing from my school to get to the high school track meet. Tom took first place in the city high jump one year. We also enjoyed watching Don on the pommel horse. I guess that's what it's called. The boys were all swimmers and divers. One year we took first, second and third places in the city diving competition (10 and under). Jim was our first place diver. I probably left some important things out, but this has to end . Scouting took most of their time after they were older. Leona
