Spare-time Sculptor

In 1959 Chuck took a group of Boy Scouts to summer camp and sat in on a merit badge class on wood carving.  He started "whittling" then and enjoyed carving as a life long hobby.  His artistic ability really shows in the details of his carvings.

And my personal favorite is the letter "B" Uncle Chuck carved for the back of the rocking chair Don gave me for a wedding gift.

Chuck was carving when he was a boy. We were in the same 8th grade
classroom. He brought his carvings
to school. I don't remember if he
worked on them there, but he prob-
ably did. He had carved an inter-
locking chain. The links were oval
and sanded until they were smooth.
They had to be from one piece of
wood because they were interlock-ing. He also carved little peoople.
Of course, they were very crude,
when compared to his later works.
